At my school (in Canada), for the whole of October and November, there was a form on the website that you could simply fill out to say you had swine flu (no need for a doctor's note), and you could get deferrals from your exams and papers or extended due dates.

I know at least one person who had a cold (everybody gets colds this time of year right), and went ahead and filled out the form and contacted the faculty, and got a three day extension on a paper. I also had a cold but being honest and all, wrote my paper while sniffling and popping cold medicine, but handed it in on time and got a shitty grade.

The thing that was going on is that the university stopped required doctor's notes because they were scarred that encouraging people to go to the doctor's would mean people wouldn't stay home and would make more people sick. Pretty unfair. Thank God they removed it and went back to doctor's notes for the final exams otherwise I would have been pissed.
